Must-See and Must-Do in Sarasota: A Newcomer’s Bucket List
No gatekeeping from me—here are my top recommendations for exploring Sarasota like a local!
Whether you’re new to Sarasota or just visiting, these are the experiences and spots that really make you feel at home on the Gulf Coast:
1. Siesta Key Beach—Beach Access 5 or 7
Want that powdery white sand without the crowds? Head to Beach Access 5 or 7 on Siesta Key early in the morning. The parking lots are small (that’s the secret!) so you’ll beat the crowds and have a much more peaceful beach day.
2. Kojo Sarasota
Located downtown near the marina, Kojo nails the perfect date night vibe with delicious food and stylish atmosphere. It’s one of my absolute favorites for a special evening out—highly recommended!
3. South Lido Beach
Great for families, South Lido Beach has a playground right on the sand, plenty of parking, clean bathrooms, and an outdoor shower. There’s even a shaded area with trees, making it ideal for little ones who need a break from the sun.
4. Ritz-Carlton Tiki Bar
Yes, it’s open to the public! Just follow the path on the side of the Ritz-Carlton and you’ll step right into vacation mode—tropical drinks, waterfront views, and an unbeatable laid-back vibe. One of Sarasota’s best-kept secrets (until now!).
5. Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium (NEW at UTC)
Opening soon at UTC, the brand new Mote Aquarium will be a state-of-the-art marine science center and a must-visit for families, marine enthusiasts, and anyone curious about our coastal ecosystem. Expect stunning exhibits, hands-on learning, and interactive experiences for all ages. This cutting-edge facility will showcase Gulf Coast sea life like never before!
6. Waterside Place
From Ranch Nite Wednesdays (think: gourmet food trucks, live music, and fun activities) to dinner at Oysteria 500 or a movie night on the lawn with the kids, Waterside Place in Lakewood Ranch is quickly becoming the heart of community life. There’s truly something for everyone here, day or night.
